Winning the Alan Bates Bursary is a huge honour and a real confidence boost to take into my first year in the industry. The financial assistance it provides means I am able to develop my portfolio of skills and resources in the coming year in a way I would never have been able to afford otherwise. In short – its a little godsend!
With the aid of the bursary I have been able to start filling in the gaps not covered- or not extensively, at least- in my training at drama school. It's great to get more practice working with recorded media, particularly. Time in front of camera without the pressure to get it right straight away, and being able to watch the results back (without the interminable wait for it to be screened) will no doubt help me improve in this field and Ive already learned a whole host of dos and donts from industry professionals.
Also, being able to have tuition in radio drama and voiceover technique at the Actors Centre, coupled with the means to make a voice-reel, has given me the opportunity to explore a whole new avenue of potential work I would otherwise have been excluded from.
I think, most importantly, membership to The Actors Centre has relieved a great deal of the anxiety of moving from training into the industry. The peace of mind it provides- knowing I have somewhere I can go to further my knowledge and stay sharp and creative in the inevitable fallow periods between work and auditions- is absolutely invaluable. I would recommend the Actors Centre to anyone with a genuine passion for continued learning and would certainly suggest every graduate apply for the Alan Bates Bursary.
